'Horror Queen' Lilia Cuntapay Passes Away at 81

Actress Lilia Cuntapay, known for her work in Philippine horror movies, has died at 81.



Lilia Cuntapay passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at about 6:00 a.m., her granddaughter Elma Cuntapay-Daet confirmed to the ABS-CBN News.


Cuntapay passed away with her family on her side in Pinili, Ilocos Norte.


Cuntapay, who is popularly known as the actress to portray scary creatures, once appealed to her colleagues after she suffered from spine sickness, which caused her to unable to walk and work. She specifically mentioned Vice Ganda and Coco Martin.


Cuntapay was born on January 3, 1935 in Gonzaga, Cagayan, Cuntapay. Her first career was a primary school teacher in Tuguegarao before engaging in buy and sell business. She then worked for the National Police Commission (Napolcom).



Throughout the 80s until the 2000s, Cuntapay is a favorite actress of producers to play the role of Pinoy mythical creatures in horror movies. In 2011, she won Best Actress trophy in Cinema One Originals Film Festival for Antoinette Jadaone’s “Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay.”
